WEEKLY REVIEW

AFA Quarter Finals and contrasting fortunes

Both the 1's and the 2's were in the AFA Quarter Finals and both drawn away in North London. The 3's were at home to old rivals Old Owens, whilst the 4's contested the SAL Minor semi-final unfortunately away against Old Actonians.

The stand-out team of the weekend were the 1's who overcame difficult opponents in Old Minchendenians and a difficult venue at Firs Farm. Matt Kerr's team marched into the AFA Semi Final with a Nathan Violet free kick and a Ben Hughes route one goal. The whole team defended well and this is our fourth consecutive AFA Semi-Final. I can't say we are setting the world alight with free-flowing football but it is winning matches and that is 6 clean sheets in the last 7 games.

The 2's had a difficult journey to Old Parmiterians. They decided to make it very challenging by having 9 players unavailable through one trip or another. The consequence was we only started with 10 men and quite rightly got what we deserved. All that hard work by Peter Morris and the players down the drain I am afraid. Since we have had a virtual mid-season break due to the climate it is hard to take so many players being away.

The 4's were involved in their second Cup-tie in consecutive Saturdays and once again we failed to cope. A cup final place was on offer. Park pitches at Actonians are not great but it is the same for both sides and you have to cope. A 3-1 defeat was the result of being three down in no time. The 4's need to sort out their defence and sort out whether they want to play regularly at the best level they can. The league is there for them if they put their collective minds to it.

The 3's were also down to basic numbers. That is to say 12 with at least one of those a doubt. A win at home against Old Owens 3-2 in a game not without incident was the result. Goals from Ben Carder 2 and Steve McMillan in a hum-dinger that saw Leon Roberts sent off (hard to imagine this) and Steve Bails play for 20 minutes in goal with a broken wrist. The outcome is that the 3's continue their winning run and are still very much in the hunt for the title.

Cheerio Chambo!

As Notts prepares to welcome the challenges of 2010, centre backs of the SAL can breathe a little easier in the knowledge that Nottsborough Legend and overhead kick specialist Rob Chamberlain is departing for pastures new, as he heads over to Hong Kong to set up an office for Notts sponsor Astus. In true Notts style, Chambo was given a right royal sending off (not literally, though refs and opponents alike always took a shine to him - remember the 6-4 away win to Southgate Olympic back in '05 anyone?!) at the Notts Xmas bash at the weekend. The man with the predigious leap, an uncanny ability to score goals when you'd least expect it, and Great Britain International at Aussie Rules (we forgive you Rob!) will be sadly missed by all at Notts. Not only has Rob been one of our longest serving players, scoring for all four Notts sides along the way - including a cracking 13 goals for the 1's in our first season in the SAL league - we lose probably the most versatile player of recent times. Often known to wear a flat cap during his fleeting appearances in nets, Chambo leaves a Notts legacy that only he could have shaped. We wish him and girlfriend Carmen all the best for the future.

Merry Christmas Chambo & a very happy and successful New Year from all at Notts!

New kit for 1st team

Nottsborough “Seven Up”

Nottsborough have received terrific recognition from the Southern Amateur League representative selectors for their wonderful season in 2008-2009. Seven of the clubs players have been selected in the Rep side to play Gloucestershire County League on the 19th September at the London Lions F.C. We have never before had so many players selected. The players selected are:

Dan Ashley
David Howson
Matt Kerr
Chris Kerr
Matt Negus
Nathan Violet
Alex Ewin

Nottsborough Coach Brian Williams has been talking about the new signings the club has made over the summer break. “I am very excited by the quality of players we have had joining the club over the last month. At third team level we have recruited 7 new players in Dean Mitic, Patrick Collins, Richard Cheeseman, Steve Molloy, Stephen McMillan, Ben Carder and Joe Taylor. One or two of these will be pushing for the 2’s. At the top of the club we have recruited several good players who will be adding competition to the existing 1’s and 2’s. Mark Shadbolt, Rich Parker, and Kevin Molloy come from a semi-pro background. David Shaw and Dan McEwan are forwards who have also played at a higher level. Crucially we have also been able to bring in a couple of goalkeepers which was a problem position for the 3’s and 4’s last season. We are very hopeful that we can bring in one more good first team player who played for us on a couple of occasions last season as we have lost Danny Marsland and Chris Apaloo for this season. We would like to be in the shake up at all levels.

Make Mine a Double!!!!

Hot on the heels of the 2’s storming 10 point winning margin as Champions of SAL Intermediate 1, the 1s completed a historic double on Saturday with a fine 3-0 win at West Wickham, coupled with Winchmore failing to win at Wilsonians.

All in all an absolutely fantastic performance by a 1s team who have been somewhat hampered by the success of the SAL team and a punishing post Christmas fixture schedule but one which Brian and the boys have steadfastly addressed, calmly and surely week by week. Hopefully most of the other SAL clubs will acknowledge the boys’ form this season and I know for a fact that the Wickham guys were very generous on Saturday in defeat and in handing over the Title crown and that was very much appreciated.

Once again I can only say how proud I am of Brian, Matt and the boys and indeed Pete and Andy’s 2s and all of the Club for all their hard work and dedication this year. I think they are a credit to the League and indeed to all amateur football. Well done.

A final quick note to mention the Vets Tour to Dijon last weekend which again goes to show that the original Nottsborough spirit is burning bright at both ends of the Club!! A bizarre rule meant that we narrowly missed out on getting to the Final even though we didn’t lose a game but we certainly won the “we can drink most/sing loudest” competition on the Saturday evening – and we all know how important that particular title is, especially on foreign shores… 8 of the tour 19 players played in the first ever 1988 season so I am fully expecting Violo and the boys to be proudly wearing the Red and Black in 2019 on some faraway pitch…. Many thanks to ex-Nottsborough 1st team boy, Ruey, who has lived and worked in Dijon for the last 15 years and who made the whole thing possible.

Vive La Nottsborough!!!

Nottsborough dine at the big table!

The SAL Annual Dinner was held this year at the Imperial Hotel, Russell Square; a fine venue. The food and company were all good and there was a general air of bonhomie. Bob Leeds did his usual job of putting people in their place, and Ian Hunter of Civil Service was asked to introduce the main speaker. Ian should not give up his day job for a career in comedy, but on the other hand he made us laugh a few times which is all you can ask for. The main speaker was Brian Barwick, latterly the main man at the FA, but previously in charge of sport at the BBC and ITV. Brian gave a good speech, revealing quite a bit about how one gets in, or on, at the Football Association. It is a shame that one or two tables did not show a bit more respect for the main speaker.

The evening came to a crescendo, as far as Nottsborough were concerned, with the presentation of the League winners trophies. The Intermediate League Trophy was presented to Pete Morris and Andy Lea by John Miller, this being the first time that Nottsborough have won this title. The celebration from the players attending was in true Nottsborough style but nothing to the scenes that followed. When Matt Kerr stepped up to collect the Senior League Trophy the Nottsborough tables erupted and confetti was thrown in the air. The Nottsborough players, already pretty high on champagne, could not be contained in their celebration. It was very nice to see a number of other tables on their feet applauding this year's League winners. Choruses of "we've won our trophy back!" and the Righteous Brothers followed; all badly sung, but with great gusto.

This evening at the Imperial Hotel brought to an final end a wonderful season for the Nottsborough club. Six of our players represented England in Turin in October. This was a great honour and they were superbly treated by the FA. This helped to kick start the Nottsborough first team season. Back home the second team were already setting the standard by getting to training half an hour early for extra work. This set the bar higher for all our teams and the second team quite rightly romped to the Intermediate title by 9 points. At first team level we were also getting players in the AFA side so that in all we had 8 players selected for rep sides during the season. Following the Turin trip we went on a superb unbeaten run which ended disappointingly in the Surrey/Kent AFA Final where a determined West Wickham got their goal and then hung on. We bounced back in tremendous fashion to secure the AFA Senior title two weeks later against a good Polytechnic side that pushed us all the way on the day. Another great unbeaten run was started and an eye-opening win at Old Owens started the push for the SAL Senior title which was secured very appropriately at West Wickham, who have been our greatly respected rivals over the last 3 seasons. Thus the Nottsborough players secured their second SAL title in 3 years, hence starting the "we've won our trophy back" anthem. It also completed a double that has only been done 6 other times in 100 years.

It will never be easy to repeat any of the feats achieved this season. There are a number of very good teams in the SAL and there are many good individual players. The standard of the SAL Senior league will be very high next year with Old Salesians, West Wickham, Winchmore Hill, and Old Owens all being easy to identify as alternative candidates for the title. There will also be a surprise team, as there is every season, and maybe this will be one of the promoted sides. Nottsborough will be very keen to defend their titles and to provide players for the new Carlsberg Cup Rep side. It should be a very interesting season and we are looking forward to it !

Brian
